FLOW – Multidisciplinary Research Framework

The visionary FLOW project addresses the wide-ranging issues associated with the manner in which digital media influence the interface between financial service providers and their customers. Several applied subprojects are being established to analyze technologically driven social changes and their structural effects on the relationship between financial advisors and customers. One goal of this work is to identify optimization potential.

In the first subproject, researchers will develop a prototypical application that supports an event-based “modeling” of customer objectives and desires. It will show options for action and potential effects and give customers a basic understanding of their personal financial situation. The tool’s cross-media applicability will tap into the potential offered by participatory media for financial consultations. Researchers will also examine the manner in which local consultations can be linked to Internet-based consultations. A primary goal is to ensure that financial data are displayed in the same way, independent of the chosen medium.

An additional fundamental field of interest concerns questions of trust, security and privacy in digital systems. The modeling and representation of personal financial situations generates valuable and sensitive data. It is crucial to study how finance-specific digital identities can be utilized to the benefit of both financial service providers and customers.

Another point of interest are the risks and chances that social networks represent for the financial industry. Even today we are witnessing developments that may permanently change the relationship between financial service providers and their customers. The issues being researched by the SDFB include the exchange of advice among customers, the emergence of investment communities and the granting of personal loans over the Internet [“social lending”].
