COINS – The History of Currency on the iPhone
With the iPhone Apple has revolutionized the market for mobile communications media and provided new options for using portable media. Combining a touch screen, an intuitive user interface and constant, location-independent connectivity, the iPhone has created a new realm of possibilities for application scenarios.
The Swiss Design Institute for Finance and Banking developed the COINS application in cooperation with the Sunflower Foundation, which is the umbrella organization of the MoneyMuseum. COINS brings the large coin collection of the MoneyMuseum to the iPhone, featuring currency from antiquity to the present. The application provides interested users with different perspectives on the world of numismatics – anytime and anywhere. The SDFB’s main interest in carrying out the project was to test the current possibilities of mobile communications media. The institute was able to gain valuable insight into the possibilities and limits, strengths and weaknesses of the latest technology.
